Sectionals Tonight

Like this photo? Want to see a Warrior basketball player thinking dunk? Don't get excited - I said "thinking" about dunking.

Click on the side bar link titled "Warrior Photoblog" to see more Warrior photos. This photoblog comes courtesy of journalist and photographer Ora Freeman who has started his photoblog to show some of the excellent photos that don't always make it to the newspapers.

Catch the Warriors in action tonight against Northridge at 6:30 PM in the Northwood Panther Pit.

You just violated the corporation policy of identifying a picture of a student on the web. You need a little more common sense there Doc....

My daughter told me her math teacher was gone again to watch his daughter play basketball. How much is this costing the corporation with a sub? Of course, if he did not get paid for those days, then the corporation comes out ahead, unless he took a sick day - then the corporation pays his salary and the sub. He has missed quite a few days because my son had him second semester. The teacher was absent more than the students.

I could agree with you about the general corporation internet use policy except that linking to articles or pictures of varsity athletes that are already identified in press publications and news media every week is not the same as posting original content without parent permission.

Varsity athletes are routinely identified in the news media without violation of privacy laws or corporation rules.

Why should the person have to identify themselves? They bring up a legitimate point. The website gives them that option.

Ms. Hurley gave explicit instructions to the coaches about naming pictures of student on a website. WCSC policy forbids it. It does not matter the source of the picture, by naming the student on a WCSC website you have violated the policy. But, you mention that the pictures themselves are the ones that do not make it to the paper and are original content provided by Ora Freeman, and I quote from your own words, "This photoblog comes courtesy of journalist and photographer Ora Freeman who has started his photoblog to show some of the excellent photos that don't always make it to the newspapers." Doc can spin this anyway he chooses, but he broke the rules.

Mr. Freeman, it is not about athletes wanting their name in the paper. You operate in a public forum where you can freely come in a take pictures to publish in your newspaper. A school website is not a public forum per se. For one, this website can be edited for content. For another, there is a WCSC policy against naming pictures of students on corporation websites. All employees are subject to the rule (at least that is what Ms. Hurley told us at the coaches' meeting at the beginning of the year - so it goes for band, and academic teams, and yearbook, etc.). Dr. Stock is a WCSC employee and is subject to the rule, and he broke the rule. Just because athletes are pictured and named in the paper does not release you or any other employee from the obligation of following the rules. Now, if Dr. Stock wishes to change the rule, then by all means he should petition the school board. But, being in the leadership position that he is in, he should admit his mistake, make an apology, and then follow the rules. Doc, how can you honestly enforce the rules of the corporation if you yourself are trying to make excuses why you can break them? Don't try to spin this one Doc, you are caught red handed. Be a leader and own up to it. And Mr. Freeman, your comments are aiding and abetting.

Oh, and in support of the previous poster, I too will remain anonymous....

In response to Mr. Freeman:

1. It seems to me that if there is a rule, then there is a good reason for it. Do you know why they made the rule? If the rule is supposed to be followed by all the employees, then it should be followed by Dr. Stock. He is the leader of the corporation, he above all people should follow the letter of the law.

2. You may be right, newspapers require identification in order to post an opinion piece. But, this website does not. You may not like that fact, but that is the rule of the website, and people have that option. It seems to me that you follow the rules that suit you, and you do not much care for the rules you do not like. You can't have it both ways.

3. Nice photos.

4. Like the other posters, I am going to remain anonymous because I have that choice.....

Anonymous is right AND Ora is right. Ora however, does not have the restrictions that school employees do. As superintendent I should have thought about it before I put it up. Because I was linking to content that others provided it never entered my mind. I need to follow the rules too. You will notice I have edited the pictures.

I am sure that to the public this seems like a silly distinction but it isn't to our employees for the simple reason that many of them have wanted to put up online photo albums and they have followed the rules about not "naming" students by identifying pictures in their postings.

PS A little tip to "anonymous" posters. You can use a name like "wawasee fan" did by clicking on "other" and that way you're still anonymous but other posters can respond to your specific post without so much confusion.

To the anonmymous poster about Mr. Zolman.....give it a break. First of all, no reason to be anonymous I am sure that Mr. Zolman can figure out what brother/sister combination he had this year...but he won't because he wouldn't waste his time. Second of all, there are plenty of employees that take time off with their 'sick kids', or for some other 'legitimate' reason. Mr. Zolman prepares his students well and I am sure that he has proper instructions for his substitute teacher. Third, and last, why can't you just be happy of someone's success....instead of being a negative factor in life. It is obvious that you can find fault in many things, but can you find positive in any? Most of us in the area are cheering for Shanna and are glad to see her parents at SOME games.....I am sure that Mr. & Mrs. Zolman would love to go to many more of them....but they are the kind of that people are definitely 'rule followers' so they only see a small percentage of their daughters college games.

From what I hear, he teaches much better (thoroughly) than some others. I'm glad he has the opportunity to see his daughter play. He's worth keeping around and her college career is almost over.
