The Class of 2007

Here is a "by the numbers" look at the Class of 2007. But...they AREN'T numbers. These are our students!

280 students as incoming freshman
201 students in the commencement class
45 students transferred to other schools
10 transferred to home school
1 student has passed away
1 was expelled and never returned
11 are working on their GED right now ... somewhere else
20 students are still in the Wawasee Academy and could graduate next year
5 have already earned a GED and moved on
3 dropped out with an official exit interview
9 students received a certificate of completion or attendance
16 students had special learning needs – 11 of them earning a diploma
9 foreign exchange students
6 students transferred here from other schools and are graduating
29 students received their diploma by working through the Wawasee Academy
50 students are in the Academic Hall of Fame
6 are graduating with Distinction with a GPA 10.7-10.9
13 are graduating with Highest Distinction with at GPA of 11.0+
65 are graduating with an Academic Honors Diploma with Core 40
80 are graduating with Core 40
33 are graduating with the regular diploma
122 of our current seniors plan on attending a 4-year college this fall
21 plan on attending a 2 year college
15 plan on attending a vocational or technical school or apprenticeship
35 plan on joining the workforce

I point these statistics out because the constant, simplistic, negative, drum beat against public education does not do much to describe the complexities and diversities of life today.

Congratulations students!

We wish you the very best!

Interesting math...
...65+80+33=178 (the total number of diplomas to be granted)...which is 23 fewer than the 201 that were identified as being in the commencement class -- no doubt some way of disguising the number of graduates -- even so, it is 88.6%.

...By my math, if you subtract the 45 that transfered out and add the 6 that transfered in, there should be a class of 241 left in the cohort...which means that even with the academy figured in, Wawasee has done a wopper by graduating a whole 83.4% of its students.

So much for "No Child Left Behind."

PLEAAASE!!!!! Can't you just read over the statistics and be glad they were provided, instead of feeling the need to pick everything to pieces. I am sure there is some explanation for what you say are discrepancies. Dr. Stock is far to careful to not post the numbers correctly. He is also far too honest to intentionally mislead anyone. Get a life!

Numbers speak for themselves. Of course, there are many good things that we can choose to focus on, but there is also the reality of those who aren't making it.

Congratulations to the many students who worked very hard to achieve this accomplishment. Many will go on to college. Even those going not going on to higher education may be very hard-working young people and be great contributors to society.

Working with a diverse group of young people is not always easy and we can't expect them to all complete school at the same time. Thanks, Wawasee, for doing your best with what was sent to you.

Some people are interested in talking points.

I'm grateful that the people at Wawasee are interested in helping students become successful in life.

As I have traveled to open houses the past few days, I constantly run into dedicated teachers who are on hand to congratulate the graduates in this special time in their lives.

I just want to say thanks to all the teachers and staff at Wawasee from kindergarten through the high school who play such a large part in the lives of their students.

Hundreds of students leave Wawasee High School every year and go on to great success in life. Wawasee teachers are a huge part of that success. Thank You!!!

Congratulations to all of the graduates.

I wonder if we take pride in the rest of the students, too.

You should pick up the March issue of National Geographic. It has a map comparing the graduation rates from 1950 and 2000. 34.5% in 1950 completed High School. 2000 had 80.4%. If that does not make you think, in 1950 6.2% got a bachelor’s Degree and 2000 it was only 24.4%

Instead of no child left behind, why not every child is given a chance.

Talk to a teacher. They chose to teach. They have a passion to help kids. It tears them up to see a child fail. They will do everything in there power to make sure your child and every child gets a great education.

Whatever the number of graduation, they have succeeded. Congratulations!

I really miss the regularity that this blog used to have.

I also wonder how we will know about school delays in the coming year.

This outsider is really amazed at the reaction to the first comment on 6/01. Get your heads out of the sand people. You can be happy that teachers are proud and showed up at all your parties.
Whoopieeee!

Now, what are you going to do the 20% or so of your students who did not graduate? I guess some of you just don't give a damn - neither about those kids nor the impact that they will have on your community.

Well, you'll probably get what you deserve.
