News Update

Congratulations to the girls basketball team for reaching the semi-state level, to the boys swim team for sending four members to the state meet, and to the boys basketball, girls swimming, wrestling. and gymnastic teams for their fine winter seasons. The Wawasee cheerleaders and pep band do a great job, too!

Please remember the calendar changes made due to this winter’s weather. There is a no school/teacher work day on Thursday, February 28. Early release days for staff development will be held on March 10 and 21.

The corporation ACT Committee shared goals with the School Board at its February meeting. Those goals are:
Reading – improve comprehension of and responses to reading across the curriculum
Writing – apply strategies and conventions through the composition of various genres (types of writing)
Math – use mathematical skills to think critically and apply knowledge and reason to solve problems
Thanks to the ACT Committee for their oversight efforts at Wawasee.

The federal government is working to reauthorize No Child Left Behind legislation. They are strongly considering the “growth model”. This model requires schools to measure the progress of individual students over time. WCSC, thanks to Dr. Bob Cockburn, is now able to track individual student scores, while also safeguarding privacy. We are ready for the NCLB changes and challenges.

Indiana received their state report card recently from Education Week. The Quality Counts report has Indiana standards, assessments, and accountability ranked #1, school finance ranked #11, chance for student success ranked #29, K-12 achievement ranked #25, teacher evaluation ranked #28, and pre-K through 16 alignment ranked #12. We are doing pretty well as a state!

How many times on an average day does a WCSC bus cross a railroad track? Would you believe 188!

What is the reaon that the Gymnastics Team is barely mentioned???? The Sectional is this week-end....it would be nice if they could be recognized like the Basketball teams!!!! They practice EVERYDAY for 3hrs!!!! They put their heart & soul into this team, not to mention the risk of serious injury!! I think they work as hard as any other Team, Squad etc. & get VERY LITTLE recognition.

I appreciate the updates and the return to consistent blogging. Thanks, Dr. Edington. Keep up the good work.

This is very interesting information, but I would like to know why they did not include much about the new "updated" results from the student survey? I wondered about a certain question regarding the principal (as I recall is was #7). When I reviewed the results I found it very interesting that they were opposite of the students views I researched through interviews. I was just wondering if there might be any secrets for that.

What school are you referring to with the survey?

Everyone, check out Wawasee High Schhol's supermileage team's blog!

The Wawasee High School survey. The students took it to share "their voice" about how they felt the school was ran. Everyone was suppose to take it in homeroom. All the results were posted except for one...then suddenly later on they posted the "revised results".

I agree. It is completely unfair that student opinions cannot be heard just because they may make a certain school official look bad. In my opinion, NOT posting the correct results has probably drawn more negative attention than the actual ones wouldve gotten.

I am an athlete at Wawasee and I want to thank you for having more information about us on this site. Its about time some relizes that sports is a big part of this community.

we all know that the one they took off was the one on Mrs. Stevens because like none of the freshmen or new students to wawasee do not know her so I think tht is why it was so low or bad. I also think she should make a speech in the auditorium in front of each grade seperately and then it would clear a alot of it up

to the athlete. You say that it's about time to recognize that sports is a big part of this community. Did ya ever notice that even when we don't have school because of weather, they still manage to have the games in the same evening!! That tells me there's TOO MUCH emphesis on sports in this community. There are other things in life. I am a sports fan and played in school. But I'm not going to put it above the things in life that I will get more use out of for the rest of my life.

Sports has a lot to offer our students in developing life skills and building character. However, good things to an extreme can turn into obsessions that are out of control. I don't think anyone in the Wawasee system means for sports to be an obsession or addiction.

Going ahead with a sporting event in an evening after a day of canceled school is carefully considered, based on how the weather conditions turn out as the day progresses. I don't have any problem with Wawasee deciding to go ahead and host the sectional basketball game even though there was no school that day. The sporting event would never happen if the school felt it would hinder someone's safety by traveling on slick roads.

The previous poster is right, however, and we need to keep perspective in our lives. But I am thankful that our entire community can benefit from the positives of athletics. Why get worked up over whether a sporting event happened or didn't happen?

To the previous poster "The sporting event would never happen if the school felt it would hinder someone's safety by traveling on slick roads". You've probably never had an athelete participate in the basketball program at WHS or heard the creed "God, Family, Basketall".

I believe God, family, basketball is to help the athletes put it in proper order. Basketball (or any sport) should not be first in one's list of priorities. So where would you put safety? You must not think it is up there with God or family?! :)

Yes I've had 3 children in this school system and also in athletics as well. I went thru this school system too. I was in track, basketball and volleyball. So I know sports can develope good life skills but it has happened many a time when school has been cancelled we still manage to have whatever sport is scheduled that night. That does put others at risk. It's just not a good practice. That speaks volumes to me. When I played it was for the love of the game. But it wasn't my life.

OH yea and basketball wouldn't be 3rd on my list either.

Anonymous said...

Yes, it does put others at risk. And no, unfortunately, safety is not on the list with God and family. Try to plan a family vacation over one of the breaks when a sport is involved and see what happens to your athelete! Don't you think education should be on that list somewhere too? :)

What about all day grade K Sports are fine but what about funding a program that can actualy boost the childs learning! I get so sick of hearing about sports and then get told no funds for a program to support learning!

We decided on Wawasee School district when we re-located here because the Sports fields weren't bigger than the school buildings! Sports should ALWAYS come second to academics. I think full time K is a great idea!
