I found this article to be a breath of fresh air.

It reminded me of a dilemma posed by the Singapore Minister of Education. He was bemoaning the fact that Singapore students lead most of the world in Math and Science but several years later the Americans are once again dominating the world economically in creative applications involving Math and Science concepts.

He poses the question, "What is it about the free-wheeling spirit of America that the rest of the world hasn't replicated yet?"

Maybe it is that stubborn independent streak that makes for frustrating parenting but often creates successful adults.

I have heard that some of those very characteristics in childhood that are often frustrating for parents serve these same children well as they become adults - I'm hoping that pans out!;)
